Identifying Cellular Drivers of Kidney Transplant Rejection
Kidney transplantation (KT) is the preferred treatment for patients with end-stage kidney disease, as it is associated with reduced mortality and improved quality of life compared to dialysis.
However, transplant rejection—both acute and chronic—is a major concern. Elevated terminally differentiated effector memory (TEMRA) CD8+ T cell presence and activity, in particular, are linked with elevated risks of kidney dysfunction and transplant failure.
Doan Ngoc and colleagues sought to understand better the relationship between these cells and kidney transplant rejection.
